Mostly Balanced – Realistic recipes created & tested to help you meet your healthy cooking goals Mostly Balanced Realistic recipes created & tested to help you meet your healthy cooking goals Sunday Morning Coffee: April 2, 2017 April 2, 2017 by Meg Leave a Comment We got pummeled by another winter storm at the end of the week, a wintry mix of heavy, wet snow turning in to rain late on Saturday. With energy low and in the mood, we decided to hunker down at my parents’ house south of the city. Charlotte always loves seeing her grandparents, and we always appreciate the extra pairs of eyes to help with the baby wrangling. It’s been cold, and the week’s menu includes several comfort food choices, pastas, and roasted vegetables, reflecting the desire to turn the oven on but keep things low key. Today, the weather warmed, and we took a walk to stretch our legs, enjoy the sun and emerging spring temps. Here’s what I’m eating and reading this week: … Read More ? It was a cold and blustery day, not ideal running conditions. While we were waiting, we decided to take Charlotte to the zoo (her first time!). Turns out, cold and blustery days aren’t great for zoos, either. The elephants, bears, and otters were all hiding in warmer spots in their habitat. We did get to see the seals, lynx, and bison, though. A fun way to spend an opening morning, but I can’t wait to take her on more zoo visits as the weather warms. I’m a recent convert to the joy and beauty of fresh flowers for the home after being a long-time grump about them (they die eventually, anyway). But now I’m totally in to them, spending $5-10 a week on fresh blossoms to add a bit of color and scent to our living room. With March as wintry and gray as it is now, how nice to have a bit of vibrant yellow in the middle of it all. Here’s what I’m eating and reading this week: … Read More ? This weekend we have gorgeous weather and are getting out to spend some time on the playground with Charlotte. But colder weather is on the way again next week. We’re taking advantage of it while we can, and I bought some hyacinths to help the house smell like spring. Here’s what I’m cooking and reading this week: … Read More ? We’ve had a mild winter thus far, but just like that, it feels we could be back in 2015 with storm upon storm making parking a nightmare on the streets of Boston, closing work and schools (and now, importantly, daycare). David and I spent a snow day home together with Charlotte, then bundled up and went out to play. Here’s what I’m eating and reading this week: … Read More ? This is the view from outside my parents’ door, looking out on to a quiet neighborhood and an abundance of trees. Here’s what I’m eating and reading this week: … Read More ? It’s a picture of the sun setting over Boston, and I realized we’re starting to get daylight for just a bit longer. We’re coming out of the dark days of winter, and I’m trying to be present in the moments with my work and family. There’s a lot to get weighed down by this week in the news, and I’m trying to continue to listen to and amplify the voices of women and writers of color. One of the more remarkable pieces of news I’ve read this week is author Roxane Gay’s response to the book deal by an anti-feminist, racist Breitbart editor by pulling her own book with the publisher. Literally putting her money where her mouth is, she’s demonstrating amazing strength and self-assurance in doing what’s right. She’s an amazing author, and her novel Hunger is one of the books scheduled to be released this year that I’m most looking forward to reading. I also really enjoyed this piece in the New York Times book review section. … Read More ? Share this: Click to share on Pinte...
